What is soot?

Soot is a natural by-product of incomplete combustion, consisting mostly of carbon particles. It can result from sources like fireplaces, stoves, furnaces, or even cooking. When it comes to candles, soot can be prevented by keeping the wicks properly trimmed and ensuring the area is well-ventilated and free from drafts—this helps maintain complete combustion and avoids sooting.

Every home contains millions of airborne particles that naturally settle on surfaces. These include common substances like dust, dirt, and pollen. When windows are open, additional particles can enter from vehicle exhaust, barbecues, or burning leaves. Airflow in the home causes these particles to accumulate on ceilings, walls, and curtains. Static electricity can also attract them to areas around electrical devices such as TVs and computer screens.
